Debossing

What is debossing?

Debossing is simply pushing the surface of the mat inward to give your design depth.  It is a very subtle look.  There is no cutting, so the mimimum size is about three-eights of an inch.  The letters will not jump out at you from across the room, but will be noticable under good lighting and viewed from close up.  Since it looks best on lighter colored mats, there are specific colors to choose from when you order.

So now, you can add a name, a date, a caption or a short phrase to your mat!  The letters and numbers are usually around .375"  to .50" in height.   The actual dimensions of the letters will depend on the length of the caption, as well as the size of the mat.

There are four fonts designed for debossing.

Ariadne is a flourishing italic typeface.

Bristol is a traditional serif typeface.

Vienna is contemporary sans serif typeface.

Thorndike is a Roman typeface and it debosses as a double line so there is width variation in the letter strokes.  It looks best a little larger.

There are punctuation marks in these debossed fonts as well.
